14 Heating (130 °C) of benzoyl hypoiodites (formed in situ from
silver benzoate and I2) in chlorobenzene results in the
formation of a mixture of biaryl, benzoate ester and benzoic
acid products. Similar reactions, but with benzoyl
hypobromites, affords only benzoate ester products, see: D.
Bryce-Smith, Nature, 1953, 172, 863.
15 See supporting information for details of the synthesis and
characterisation of 1.
16 The reaction of 2-chlorobenzoic acid under these conditions
(no PC, Br2 (3.5 equiv)) afforded phenyl 2-chlorobenzoate
(12%). No chlorinated arene by-products were formed, only
bromobenzene mixtures.
