23, 2623–2630. However, the use of 4-bromo-5-hydroxymethylimidazoles
18 and 19 carrying out oxidation, enol-ether-forming chain elongation
and subsequent enol ether cleavage and reduction allowed us to synthe-
sise key compounds 14 and 15, respectively. For procedures and data,
see the Supporting Information.
[30] Alternatively, 4-iodination also succeeded (for procedure and data, see
the Supporting Information). Unfortunately, the subsequent sulfur re-
moval was accompanied by a significant amount of deiodination, which
forced us to abandon this attempt. Selective C-4 iodination using 1-
methyl-5-hydroxyethylimidazole failed.

[35] Starting from 1-methyl-5-hydroxyethylimidazole 12, the analogous se-
quence of sulfide formation by Mitsunobu reaction and oxidation
smoothly delivered the sulfone bearing a small C-4 hydrogen substitu-
ent. Julia–Kociensky olefination using such a C-4-H imidazole gave 5-
allylimidazoles, which suffered from double bond migration to form 5-
vinylimidazoles. For data for the sulfide and sulfone, see the Supporting
Information.
[36] R. F. Heck, J. P. Nolley, J. Org. Chem. 1972, 37, 2320–2322. Because of the
failure of iodine introduction, the Heck reaction had to be run using the
bromides. Stille cross-coupling as a final step was avoided, since residual
tin impurities might influence the phytological tests.
