Dimerization of sorbic acid (1) and its methyl ester (2) with and without montmorillonit as catalyst leads to the cyclohexenes 3 to 10.Structure and configuration of these compounds are established by NMR-spectroscopic methods. The main product 3 has the two carboxyl groups in 1,3-position; this is in agreement with frontier-orbital considerations.Treatment of 3 or 10 with alkali leads to 11 and 12, respectively.
