During the chlorination of perylene-3,4,9,10-tetracarboxylic acid the first four chlorine atoms are directed at the bay positions of the perylene ring (positions 1,6,7,12), and only the first two bromine atoms are directed at these positions in the case of bromination.Substitution of the nitro groups by chlorine in 1,7-dinitroperylene-3,4,9,10-tetracarboxylic acid takes place unusually readily. Methods were found for the dehalogenation of the halogen derivatives of perylene-3,4,9,10-tetracarboxylic acid.
