The products of the reactions of liquid sulfur trioxide with aryl arenesulfonates in CCl4 solution were studied by means of 1H NMR spectroscopy.It was shown that aryl arenesulfonates with SO3 may form linear pyrosulfonates.However, the latter, unlike alkyl arenepyrosulfonates, cannot be used for the sulfonation of aromatic compounds because of their ready thermal dissociation into the original compounds.
