Synthesis of some fused pyrazolopyridine heterocyclic compounds

Diazotized 3-amino-4,6-dimethyl-1H-pyrazolopyridine (3) has been used as a versatile precursor to prepare several heterocyclic compounds.Compound 3 when coupled with active methylene compounds such as ethyl cyanoacetate, malononitrile, diethyl malonate, ethyl acetoacetate and acetylacetone gives the corresponding hydrazono derivatives (4-8).Refluxing of 4-6 in acetic acid furnishes the pyridopyrazolotriazines (9-11).Compounds 7 and 8 when refluxed with hydrazine and phenylhydrazine afforded the pyrazolopyridylhydrazopyrazoles (12-15) which are also obtained by coupling 3 with pyrazoles 16-19.
