Description

Zirconium N-Propoxide, also known as Zirconium(IV) n-propoxide, is a yellow-colored liquid with an alcohol-like odor. It has a density similar to water and is insoluble in water. This slightly viscous colorless to pale yellow solution is used as a precursor in the production of zirconia and for studying the thermophysical properties of hybrid films.

Uses

Used in Zirconia Production:
Zirconium N-Propoxide is used as a precursor for the production of zirconia, a high-performance ceramic material with applications in various industries due to its unique properties such as high melting point, hardness, and chemical stability.
Used in Optics and Photonics Industry:
Zirconium N-Propoxide is used as a material for studying the thermophysical properties like thermal conductivity and thermal effusivity of hybrid films. Reactivity Profile

Organometallics, such as TETRA-N-PROPYL ZIRCONATE, are reactive with many other groups. Incompatible with acids and bases. Organometallics are good reducing agents and therefore incompatible with oxidizing agents. Often reactive with water to generate toxic or flammable gases.

Health Hazard

Inhalation or contact with material may irritate or burn skin and eyes. Fire may produce irritating, corrosive and/or toxic gases. Vapors may cause dizziness or suffocation. Runoff from fire control or dilution water may cause pollution.

Purification Methods

Although it was reported that it could not be crystallised or sublimed even at 150o/10-4mm [Bradley & Wardlaw J Chem Soc 280 1951], the propoxide, when properly prepared, has been purifed by distillation in a high vacuum [Bradley et al. J Chem Soc 2025 1953]. [Beilstein 1 IV 1420.]
