General Description

2-[(Dimethoxyphosphinothioyl)thio]butanedioic acid dipropyl ester, also known as malathion, is an organophosphate compound commonly used as an insecticide for agricultural and residential purposes. It works by inhibiting the activity of acetylcholinesterase, an enzyme that breaks down the neurotransmitter acetylcholine. This results in the accumulation of acetylcholine in the nervous system of insects, leading to paralysis and death. Malathion is considered to be a moderately toxic compound to humans and is classified as a cholinesterase inhibitor. It is also highly toxic to aquatic organisms and should be used with caution to minimize environmental impact.
