Bitter Orange, scientifically known as Citrus aurantium Linne, is a citrus fruit belonging to the Rutaceae family. It is primarily known for its fragrant peel oil and the various products derived from it, such as neroli bigarade and orange flower absolute. The oil obtained from the fresh fruit rinds is of high quality and has a fragrant, bitter flavor. Uses

Used in Flavor Industry:
Bitter Orange is used as a flavoring agent for alcoholic beverages, particularly liqueurs, due to its fragrant, bitter flavor and unique aroma.
Used in Perfumery and Cosmetics Industry:
Bitter Orange is used as a raw material for the production of fragrant products such as neroli bigarade, orange flower absolute, and petitgrain bigarade oil. These products are derived from the flowers, twigs, and leaves of the bitter orange tree and are valued for their powerful floral odors and suave scents, making them ideal for use in perfumes and cosmetics.
Used in Essential Oils Industry:
Bitter Orange peel oil, obtained through expression or steam distillation, is used in the essential oils industry for its distinctive scent and composition. The oil is composed mainly of limonene (93-95%), with varying amounts of other constituents such as linalyl acetate and decanal. The preferred quality of bitter orange oil is produced in Spain, known as Seville bitter orange oil.

Preparation

By the expression of the fresh peel of the fruit, Citrus aurantium Linne, by various methods, without the use of heat.

Essential oil composition

Dried flowers and leaves of bitter orange had a similar flavonoid pattern, but the flavonoid levels of flowers were higher than those of leaves. The mean levels of the principal flavonoid compounds were, respectively, total flavonoids 12.35 and 1.06%, neohesperidin 5.44 and 0.08%, naringin 1.93 and 0.06%, eriocitrin 0.38 and 0.25%.

Essential oil composition

The main constituents include d-limonene, various acids, aldehydes and diesters.
