68916-91-6 Usage

Description

Licorice extract, derived from the roots and rhizomes of Glycyrrhiza glabra, is a sweet-tasting and mildly fragrant natural extract. It is produced by extracting the comminuted roots and rhizomes with boiling water, followed by evaporation of the aqueous extract. The chief constituent of licorice root is glycyrrhizin, which is present in concentrations ranging from 5 to 24 percent depending on the variety of licorice used. Licorice extract is known for its anti-irritant properties, ability to absorb UVA and UVB rays, and its effectiveness as a depigmenting agent and tyrosinase inhibitor.

Uses

Used in Pharmaceutical Industry:
Licorice extract is used as an anti-irritant due to its soothing and anti-inflammatory properties. Its ability to absorb UVA and UVB rays makes it a useful ingredient in sunscreens and other skincare products.
Used in Cosmetics Industry:
Licorice extract is used as a depigmenting agent for its ability to inhibit melanin synthesis and act as a tyrosinase inhibitor. Studies have shown that it is more effective than kojic acid and 75 times more effective than ascorbic acid, making it a popular choice for skin lightening and brightening products.
Used in Food and Beverage Industry:
Licorice extract is used as a natural sweetener and flavoring agent in various food and beverage products. Its lingering sweet glycyrrhizin taste, with a brown, syrupy, woody aftertaste, adds a unique and pleasant flavor to confectionery, beverages, and other food items.
Used in Traditional Medicine:
Licorice extract has been used in traditional medicine for its pharmacological properties, which include anti-inflammatory, antiviral, and immune-modulating effects. It is often used in herbal remedies and supplements to support respiratory health, digestive health, and overall well-being.

Composition

A number of substances are known to be present in licorice extract, some of which may be artifacts introduced in processing. Principal constituents consist of glycyrrhizin (20%), reducing sugars (5%), nonreducing sugars (5%), starch, dextrin and gums (30%), ash (8%) and moisture (17%). In addition, licorice roots contain triterpene, flavonoids and B vitamins (Burdock, 1997).
