Description
Chloramine-T trihydrate, also known as Chloramine T (CAT), is a white to yellow crystalline powder with a characteristic odor. It is an active chlorine compound that exhibits antimicrobial activity and is sensitive to air, causing eye and skin burns. Chloramine-T trihydrate is known to explode when heated above 130°C (anhydrous) and decomposes slowly under the influence of air, producing chlorine (trihydrate). Recrystallise it from hot water (2mL/g). Dry it in a desiccator over CaCl2 where it loses water. Protect it from sunlight. It is used for the detection of bromate and halogens, and Co, Cr, Fe, Hg, Mn, Ni and Sb ions.
