7080-50-4 Usage

Description

Chloramine-T trihydrate, also known as Chloramine T (CAT), is a white to yellow crystalline powder with a characteristic odor. It is an active chlorine compound that exhibits antimicrobial activity and is sensitive to air, causing eye and skin burns. Chloramine-T trihydrate is known to explode when heated above 130°C (anhydrous) and decomposes slowly under the influence of air, producing chlorine (trihydrate). On heating or contact with acids, it decomposes and releases toxic gases.

Uses

Used in Pharmaceutical Industry:
Chloramine-T trihydrate is used as an intermediate in the manufacture of chemical substances, particularly in the pharmaceutical industry. It is combined with iodogen or lactoperoxidase and is commonly utilized for labeling peptides and proteins with radioiodine isotopes. The hypochlorite released from chloramine-T acts as an effective oxidizing agent for iodide to form iodine monochloride (ICl).
Used in Organic Synthesis:
Chloramine-T trihydrate serves as a source of halonium ions and nitrogen anions in organic synthesis, particularly in heterocyclic chemistry. It is a commonly used reagent for various chemical reactions.
Used in Detection of Bromate and Halogen Compounds:
Chloramine-T trihydrate can be employed for the detection of bromate and halogens, making it a valuable tool in chemical analysis and research.

Purification Methods

Recrystallise it from hot water (2mL/g). Dry it in a desiccator over CaCl2 where it loses water. Protect it from sunlight. It is used for the detection of bromate and halogens, and Co, Cr, Fe, Hg, Mn, Ni and Sb ions.
