The reaction of 8-amino-6-methoxyquinoline (1) with α-bromopropionic (2) and butyric (8) acids leads to facile ring closure to yield besides the desired esters (3 and 9), 4-methoxy-2-methyl-3-oxo-(1H)-2,3-dihydropyrroloquinoline (6) and 2-ethyl-4-methoxy-3-oxo-(1H)-2,3-dihydropyrroloquinoline (10) respectively.Catalytic hydrogenation of 8-(2-carbethoxyethyl)-amino-6-methoxyquinoline (3) gives 9-methoxy-2-methyl-3-oxo-6,7-dihydro-5H-pyridoquinoxaline (7).
