78-35-3 Usage
Description
Linalyl isobutyrate is a flavoring agent with a light, fruity odor and a lavender note, along with a sweet flavor reminiscent of black currant. It is a liquid that is slightly yellow in color and can be synthesized by esterification of linalool with isobutyric anhydride. It is also known as 3,7-dimethyl-2,6-octadien-3-yl isobutrate.
Uses
Used in Flavor Industry:
Linalyl isobutyrate is used as a flavoring agent for its fruity odor and sweet taste. It is miscible in alcohol, ether, and chloroform, making it suitable for use in various food and beverage products.
Used in Fragrance Industry:
Due to its light, fruity odor and lavender note, linalyl isobutyrate is also used in the fragrance industry to add a pleasant scent to perfumes, colognes, and other scented products.
Used in Chemical Synthesis:
Linalyl isobutyrate is obtained by chemical synthesis, making it a useful compound in the production of other chemicals and materials.
Preparation
By esterification of linalool with isobutyric anhydride.
Toxicity evaluation
In the rat, the acute oral LD 50
was reported to be > 36.3 g/kg (Jenner, Hagan,
Taylor, Cook & Fitzhugh, 1964). At this dose, the highest tested, toxic signs included depression,
wet fur and diarrhoea, but the surviving animals appeared normal after 1 wk. In the mouse, the
acute oral LD 50
was 151 g/kg (Jenner et al. 1964); animals were depressed soon after treatment
and excitable after 1 hr, with rough fur, and death occurred between 4 hr and 3 days. The acute
dermal LD 50
in rabbits was reported as > 5 g/kg (Moreno, 1974).
Check Digit Verification of cas no
The CAS Registry Mumber 78-35-3 includes 5 digits separated into 3 groups by hyphens. The first part of the number, starting from the left, has 2 digits, 7 and 8 respectively; the second part has 2 digits, 3 and 5 respectively.
Calculate Digit Verification of CAS Registry Number 78-35:
(4*7)+(3*8)+(2*3)+(1*5)=63
63 % 10 = 3
So 78-35-3 is a valid CAS Registry Number.

A practical and convenient synthesis of hotrienol, an excellent fruity smelling compound
Yuasa, Yoshifumi,Kato, Yasushi
, p. 4036 - 4039 (2007/10/03)
The practical and convenient synthesis of hotrienol, which is an excellent fruity smelling compound, has been performed by the ene-type chlorination of linalyl acetate and then dehydrochlorinated by lithium bromide and lithium carbonate in DMF, followed by hydrolysis in three steps with an overall yield of 55%.
