S-Adenosyl Methionine or SAM-e is a naturally occurring nootropic supplement, commonly used in Europe as a potential treatment for depression and arthritis. SAM-e has not been approved by the FDA, but only because it is labeled as a dietary supplement, and although many clinical studies have been performed in Europe it has not been done on the scale required for FDA aproval. In the studies however, SAM-e has been shown to be as effective, if not more, than many commonly used antidepressants such as Zoloft, Prozac, and Paxil, and without many of the negative side effects.
