Cholestyramine or colestyramine (Questran, Questran Light, Cholybar) is primarily used to treat hypercholesterolemia, but can also be used to treat the pruritus, or itching, that often occurs during liver failure, due to the liver's inability to eliminate bile.Cholestyramine is also used to prevent diarrhea in Crohn's disease patients.
Cholestyramine is available as powder form, in 4 gram packets, or in larger canisters. The recommended starting adult dose for Cholestyramine for Oral Suspension USP Light powder is one pouch or one level scoopful (5.7 grams of Cholestyramine for Oral Suspension USP Light powder contains 4 grams of anhydrous cholestyramine resin) once or twice a day. The recommended maintenance dosage for Cholestyramine for Oral Suspension USP Light powder is 2 to 4 pouches or scoopfuls daily (8 to 16 grams anhydrous cholestyramine resin) divided into two doses.
Patients with hypothyroidism, diabetes, nephrotic syndrome, dysproteinemia, obstructive liver disease, kidney disease, or alcoholism should consult their doctor before taking cholestyramine.Other drugs should be taken at least one hour before or four to six hours after cholestyramine to reduce possible interference with absorption.
