Reactions of 2,2-Diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH)
(λmax = 528 nm) and increase in DPPH– absorbance (λmax
428 nm). After workup with HCl (1 ), products were separated by
TLC (silica gel GF254, Merck, dichloromethane/toluene 4:1, v/v).

Preparative Procedure. Synthesis of 2-[4-(4-Formyl-2,6-dimeth-
oxyphenoxy)phenyl]-2-phenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (14): The solid 3 and
15-C-5 (molar ratio = 1:2) in dichloromethane (50 mL for 1 g reac-
tant mixture) afforded the supramolecular complex 12. This solu-
tion was treated with DPPH (molar ratio DPPH/12 2:1) with stir-
ring at room temperature for 3 h. The reaction mixture was washed
twice with water, then four times with HCl (1 ), and then again
twice with water. The organic phase was dried with anhydrous so-
dium sulfate and the solvent was removed under reduced pressure.
Preparative TLC (silica gel GF254, Merck, dichloromethane/toluene
7:3, v/v, twice), allowed the isolation of compound 14 [Rf(14) =
0.32; Rf(DPPH) = Rf(DPPH-H) = 0.82, silica gel GF254, Merck,
dichloromethane/toluene 1:1, v/v]. It was kept in CH2Cl2 solution
over PbO2. Yield 42% (relative to 3), blue-violet solid. EPR
(dichloromethane): aN(2) = 8.51 G, aN(1) = 8.61 G. UV/Vis (dichlo-
romethane): λmax = 548 nm. C27H20N5O10 (574.5): calcd. C 56.45,
H 3.51, N 12.19; found C 56.43, H 3.48, N 12.17.

phenyl-1-picrylhydrazine (15): The blue-violet solution of 14 in
dichloromethane was shaken with an aqueous solution of excess
ascorbic acid. The yellow organic phase was dried with Na2SO4
and concentrated under reduced pressure, affording yellow solid 15
in 98% yield. TLC (Rf = 0.29, silica gel GF254, Merck, dichloro-
methane/toluene 4:1, v/v). It can be conserved in dichloromethane
