The effect of framework functionality on the catalytic activation of supported Pd nanoparticles in the Mizoroki–Heck coupling reaction

Palladium nanoparticles (Pd-NPs) were supported on functional and nonfunctional Co-coordination polymers (Pd/CoBDCNH2 and Pd/CoBDC). Advanced analytical techniques revealed that Pd-NPs are supported on the external surface of the polymer framework and the functionalized framework possesses effective influence to prevent Pd-NP aggregation. Supported Pd-NPs were effectively applied as heterogeneous recyclable catalysts in the Mizoroki–Heck C–C cross coupling reactions of iodobenzene and either aromatic or aliphatic terminal alkenes. Catalytic results exhibited that highly dispersed Pd-NPs with low loading (1%) on the functional polymer (Pd/CoBDCNH2) are more effective than aggregated Pd-NPs with high loading (9%) on the nonfunctional polymer (Pd/CoBDC). Both catalysts can simultaneously provide high activity and selectivity to E-coupled products, high efficiency in low amounts, easy separation of heterogeneous catalyst and appropriate performance in the recycling reaction without addition of a reducing agent.

A series of cinnamyl compounds were synthesized from abundantly available methoxylated phenylpropenes and evaluated for their antimicrobial activity by the broth microdilution method against fourteen opportunistic bacterial and fungal human pathogens. Structure-activity relationship studies indicated that methylenedioxy cinnamaldehyde exhibited promising broad-spectrum activity against the tested microorganisms and hence was used as a lead structure to synthesize novel Schiff bases/heterocyclic compounds (23-33) under microwave irradiation. Out of these, thiazole-based Schiff bases have shown promising antibacterial activity against B. subtilis (26; MIC 0.12 mM), M. luteus (27; MIC 0.20 mM), and S. aureus (27; MIC 0.20 mM). Also, the compounds 23-33 were investigated for in vitro antioxidant activity using DPPH? assay where compound 28 showed a maximum of 80.71 % inhibition.

An efficient chemoselective protocol is developed for the synthesis of (E)-cinnamic esters from substituted cinnamaldehydes or cinnamyl alcohols using a combination of DDQ and heterogeneous catalyst under microwave irradiation. The method showed remarkable selectivity for cinnamaldehydes over aliphatic and aromatic aldehydes, which is a novel finding. The results demonstrate that the developed protocol can be a useful synthetic tool for chemoselective esterification in total synthesis of complex organic compounds.
