99400-01-8 Usage

Description

Calcium sulfate, also known as gypsum, is a grayish-white dense powder that occurs naturally in both an anhydrous form (anhydrite) and a hydrated form (gypsum). It is also a byproduct of many chemical reactions. Calcium sulfate anhydrous contains approximately 29% calcium, while calcium sulfate dihydrate contains approximately 23% calcium. It has a wide range of industrial uses, including as a source of sulfur and sulfuric acid, in cements, tiles, plaster, as a soil conditioner, in paints, dyes, polishes, and as a food additive.

Uses

Used in Pharmaceutical Aid:
Calcium sulfate is used as a tablet and capsule diluent.
Used in Food Industry:
Calcium sulfate is used as a filler and baking powder for standardization purposes, a firming agent in canned vegetables, a source of calcium ions in dough, in soft-serve ice cream to produce dryness and stiffness, a calcium ion source for reaction with alginates to form dessert gels, and as a calcium source for food enrichment.
Used in Desiccant Applications:
In the form of β-anhydrite (the nearly anhydrous form), calcium sulfate is used as a desiccant.
Used in Coagulant Applications:
Calcium sulfate is used as a coagulant in products like tofu, which is a bean curd.
Used in Color-Indicating Variants:
When sold as a color-indicating variant under the name "Drierite", calcium sulfate appears blue or pink due to impregnation with cobalt chloride, which functions as a moisture indicator.
Used in Industrial Applications:
Calcium sulfate (CaSO4·2H2O) is commonly used as blackboard chalk.
Used in Natural State:
Unrefined calcium sulfate is a translucent, crystalline white rock, with many forms known, including Alabaster and Gypsum. Selenite, Satin spar, Desert rose, and Gypsum flower are four varieties of Gypsum minerals; all four varieties are crystalline and have the same chemical formulation, CaSO4·2H2O. All varieties of gypsum are very soft minerals (hardness: 2 on Mohs scale), which is the most important identifying characteristic of gypsum.

Preparation

Calcium Sulfate may be prepared by the addition of a soluble calcium salt to a solution of sodium sulfate: CaCl2+ Na2SO4→CaSO4+ 2NaCl The product is generally a dihydrate although other hydrates are also known. The CAS numbers of these materials are: 7778-18-9 (anhydrite); 10034-76-1 (hemihydrate); 10101-41-4 (dihydrate).

Check Digit Verification of cas no

The CAS Registry Mumber 99400-01-8 includes 8 digits separated into 3 groups by hyphens. The first part of the number, starting from the left, has 5 digits, 9,9,4,0 and 0 respectively; the second part has 2 digits, 0 and 1 respectively.
Calculate Digit Verification of CAS Registry Number 99400-01:
(7*9)+(6*9)+(5*4)+(4*0)+(3*0)+(2*0)+(1*1)=138
138 % 10 = 8
So 99400-01-8 is a valid CAS Registry Number.
